The frog is not the position
After reading this, you should be able to separate the cultural reason people recognise the name from the contract facts that decide control.

Recognition is not a disclosure
A meme spreads because people already understand the reference. That is an advantage in attention and a disadvantage in scrutiny: the name arrives pre-trusted. The research this site’s lead essay draws on describes memecoins as shaped by cultural narratives and social-media dynamics. Pepe is a case of that shape, not a proof of the general claim.
What the contract evidence establishes is narrower. There is a specific address. A scan passed its hard checks and warned on controls. Taxes on the simulated route were zero. None of that tells you who deployed it, who holds the largest wallets, or what was said in the telegram on the way up.
Ticker reuse
The collision list is part of the culture story. Other people can deploy a token called PEPE on another chain and borrow the recognition. A reader who arrived from a picture of the frog has not yet chosen an asset. The address is the choice.
What this page does not establish
- No archive of the launch posts, and no community interviews.
- No review of Matt Furie’s later statements beyond the 2023 reporting already flagged as second-hand.
REVIEW WHEN
- A new PEPE-symbol contract outranks this address.
- A documented statement from the rights holder changes the attribution.
